Description

The Pencil Nebula is located around 815 light years from Earth, and is part of the large Vela supernova remnant. Shock waves from the supernova encountered a region of dense stellar gas, giving the nebula its wispy, rippled shape and causing it to glow.

The pulsar left over from the supernova is slowing at a rate that suggests the original explosion occurred around 11,000 years ago. Researchers suggest that the supernova would have appeared 250 times brighter than Venus, and be visible in broad daylight.

This region is prominent in Ha and Oiii, so a HOO colour palette was used for the final image.
